Windows XP - Sharing a CD/DVD Drive on a Network

This document explains how to share a CD or DVD drive over a network in Windows XP.

Windows 9x/2000/XP

NOTE: Windows 95/98, Windows Me, Windows 2000, and Windows XP are no longer supported by the Help Desk. We can only provide best effort support. These products are no longer actively supported by Microsoft. No further development will take place on these products and security updates are no longer issued. It is highly recommended that you upgrade to Windows 8, 7, or Vista.

Sharing a CD/DVD Drive

  1. Open My Computer, right click on the CD or DVD drive, and click Sharing and Security...

  2. Select the Sharing tab, then select the Share this folder radio button. Make sure to enter a helpful Share name. Then, click on the Permissions box.

  3. Select Everyone if it is not already selected and check the Allow checkbox to the right of Read.

  4. Click OK in the two windows to close them.

Accessing a Shared CD/DVD Drive

  1. Open My Network Places from the left pane in My Computer.

  2. Select the CD/DVD drive.
