Web Accessibility - Obtaining Transcripts (transcribing) Videos and Podcasts

Transcribing for captioning and providing text transcripts for multimedia (video, podcasts, etc.) allows the content to be indexed and archived so that it is fully searchable. Individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, and anyone with limited or no access to sound output also benefit. This includes anyone trying to access the content in a noisy environment, and people with missing, broken, or otherwise inadequate sound hardware.

Does your Podcast need to include a transcript?

Since audio is a non-text element, a text equivalent, such as a transcript, must be available if it is on the web.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Web Accessibility Policy is based on the Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, specifically (b) Equivalent alternatives for any multimedia presentation shall be synchronized with the presentation.

Who does transcripts and how much do they cost?

A small MP3 file "Is your Document Accessible?" was sent to four (4) vendors to compare costs, turnaround time, accuracy and ease of transaction. The small file transcribing results are listed.

Additional files, more representative of classroom lectures, or events with multiple speakers, were also sent to these vendors. The results of larger files transcribed are also listed.

There will likely need to be proofing no matter which service you use.
