Kurzweil 3000 v11 (Win) - Client Installation and Testing for Campus InfoLabs
This document is targeted for campus InfoLab lab managers and lab support staff who install and maintain software. It outlines the installation and testing process that is recommended for Kurzweil 3000 v11 for Windows, particularly prior to deploying a new image to a lab.
Installation
- Obtain install CD or installer (available from the InfoLab Coordinator or the InfoLab software share).
- Install client software
- Select "Kurzweil 3000 Network Professional (B&W)" as the client type to install. The other two client types will still be installed, but the program will default to this type, which is the type that we have network licenses for.
- When prompted by the "Kurzweil 3000 NetworkWork Browser Utility", enter the IP address (available from the InfoLab Coordinator) of the server that has the Kurzweil 3000 Network Engine installed. This server is used to obtain one of the "floating licenses" when Kurzweil starts.
- Update client software. As of 1/12/2009 the current version is 11.00.
- Automatic update: Launch Kurzweil client and go to Online menu > Updates. Then, select the appropriate update(s) to download. If Kurzweil downloads any updates, it will ask you to exit Kurzweil to install the update(s).
- Manual update: Download latest update and manually install.
- Install "KESI Reader" extension (if using Firefox 3.x)
- Notes:
- Directions for Firefox 2.x appear below, but Mozilla is no longer going to release updates for Firefox 2.x.
- While "Read the Web" can be used with Internet Explorer, it works much more reliably with Firefox.
- The Firefox extension Read the Web v2.1 that ships with Kurzweil 3000 v10.x and its updates is not compatible with Firefox 3.x.
- Download the Read the Web extension v2.2 from the InfoLab software share.
- If there is an existing version of the Kurzweil KESI Reader Firefox extension installed, launch Firefox and go to Tools > Add-ons to uninstall it.
- Restart Firefox 3.x
- Drag the replacement kesireader.xpi (v2.2) extension onto either the Add-ons window or an open Firefox window.
- The "Software Installation" window will come up for extensions; click the "Install Now" button.
- Restart Firefox 3.x
- Launch Firefox and hide the Kurzweil toolbar so that it does not appear for every user opening Firefox. However, Kurzweil users will have to know to unhide it because starting the "Read the Web" feature will not automatically unhide the Kurzweil Firefox toolbar.
- Install "KESI Reader" extension (if using Firefox 2.x)
- Notes:
- While "Read the Web" can be used with Internet Explorer, it works much more reliably with Firefox.
- If there is an existing version of the Kurzweil KESI Reader Firefox extension installed, launch Firefox and go to Tools > Add-ons to uninstall it.
- Start Kurzweil and log in
- Go to Tools > Options > Reading and select "Mozilla FireFox" under "Read the Web"
- When prompted, select "Yes" to install the "KESIReader Firefox extension"
- If not prompted to install the extension while in the Options window, select Read > Read the Web, and you should be prompted to install the extension.
- If the extension is still not installed, then manually install the extension by opening the Firefox Add-ons window (under the Tools menu) and dragging the file C:\Program Files\Kurzweil Educational Systems\Common Files\kesireader.xpi onto the Add-ons window.
- Launch Firefox and hide the Kurzweil toolbar so that it does not appear for every user using Firefox. However, Kurzweil users will have to know to unhide it because starting the "Read the Web" feature will not automatically unhide the Kurzweil Firefox toolbar.
Testing
- Verify that the shortcuts to the folders "Kurzweil 3000 Output Audio" and "Kurzweil 3000 Pending Audio" are on the desktop. If not, shortcuts can be created on the desktop from the original folders found in "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\KESI"
- Launch Kurzweil and verify that "Kurzweil 3000 B/W Professional 11.0" is automatically selected as the License Type
- Enter a User Name to start the program. If you have been logged on previously with this User Name, any customizations you made to the settings/interface should have been retained.
- Test reading within Kurzweil
- Copy and paste some text into Kurzweil or open a Word document.
- Click the green read button on the toolbar to begin reading from the cursor (speakers or headphones required to hear the audio).
- Test the "Read the Web" function.
- Go to Read > Read the Web
- Firefox should launch automatically
- Unhide the KESI Reader Toolbar in Firefox if it is not visible.
- Click in a web page where you want it to start reading.
- Click the green Play button (speakers or headphones required to hear the audio)
- Close Firefox
- Test scanning
- Put a document on the scanner or in the sheet feeder.
- Click the "Scan" button in Kurzweil
- If scanning does not start, verify that the scanner is attached correctly and go to Scan > Scanner Setup > Select Scanner to verify that the correct scanner is selected.
