Active Directory - Getting Started

Welcome to the Campus Active Directory! Here is some information to get you started using the service.

Overview

The Campus Active Directory service provides a centralized Active Directory for the University of Wisconsin - Madison. The main feature of the Campus Active Directory is the availability of automatically-maintained campus user accounts (NetIDs), which reduces the need to provision accounts. If you are interested in the service, you can apply for access here: Campus Active Directory Request Form. The rest of this document assumes that you have a Campus AD OU and OU administrator account.

OU Administrator Account

You have been provisioned an OU administrator account which looks like netid-ou. This account gives you access to resources in the Campus Active Directory.

New Users: If you have just been provisioned an OU administrator account, you should change its password as soon as possible. You will not be able to join a machine to the Campus AD domain until you have done so. Active Directory - Changing your account password

The Campus AD Technical Advisory Group (TAG) meets monthly to allow users of the shared campus Active Directory service to be integrally involved in the technical and policy decision-making process as it relates to service direction and change. If you are interested in being a part of the TAG, please contact activedirectory@doit.wisc.edu.

Where to Get Help

In addition to the Wiki linked-to above, documentation is available in our Knowledge Base. The Knowledge Base covers campus-specific information for accessing and configuring machines in the Active Directory.

Active Directory is a complex technology. If you are new to Active Directory, we highly recommend obtaining some training resources. Active Directory best practices are not covered in the support of this service.

If you have any questions or issues, please e-mail activedirectory@doit.wisc.edu.
