PKI - Configuring Outlook 2002/2003

PKI can be used with Outlook 2002/2003 to send secure, digitally encrypted email.If you have not installed your digital certificate, please use the applicable documentation below.

Using PKI with Outlook

1. Open Outlook. Click on Tools | Options.
2. Click on the Security tab.
3. In the "Secure e-mail" section, check Send clear text signed message when sending signed messages.
4. Click on the Settings button.
5. Under the "Security Settings Preferences" section, check both Default Security Setting for this Secure Message Format and Default Security Setting for all secure messages.
6. Under the "Certificates and Algorightms section there are two "Choose..." buttons. Click on the top one. Select your appropriate certificate, and click the OK button. This should fill in the following four sections:
   • Signing Certificate
   • Hash Algorithm
   • Encryption Certificate
   • Encryption Algorithm
7. The defaults should all be correct. Click OK.
8. Click OK in the "Options" window. Your certificate is now configured for encrypting and signing.

Sending Signed and Encrypted Messages

Note: In order to send encrypted messages with Outlook, you must have received a signed email from the recipient. If you don't have a certificate for the recipient, Outlook will either refuse to send the message or allow you to override the encryption and send it unencrypted.

1. Compose a new message in Outlook.
2. In the message window, click on Options....



3. Click on Security Settings.



4. From this window, you can either sign or encrypt your message.
   1. To digitally sign a message:
      • Check Add digital signature to this message
      • Check Send this message as clear text signed
   2. To encrypt a message:
      • Check Encrypt message contents and attachments
5. Click OK.
6. In the "Message Options" window, click Close.
7. Send the message as you normally do.
8. Provide your PKI certificate/token password if requested.
