PKI (Win) - Installing USB Token Driver and Utility
Follow the directions below to install your certificate to a USB token. These instructions apply to Windows users only; technicians are working on making PKI compatible USB tokens for Mac users available in the near future.
NOTE: Vista 64 bit OS is available but currently not supported by DoIT. This and other downloads can be found in the "PKI Files" area on the right hand side.
Note: You are not obligated to use the USB token to store your certificate, although it is the preferred method.
- Insert the setup CD into your CD ROM drive (if you were provided with a CD.) If you were not
provided with a CD, you can
download the driver from the
UW-Madison PKI website. Save the
file RTE_3_60.msi to a location you will remember.
- Browse to the stored location and double click on the file RTE_3_60.msi. The automated
install will take place and will last about 30 seconds. Accept all defaults.
- Restart your computer.
- Insert your blue USB token into any USB port which is directly connected to your computer.
A red LED light on the token will flash for several seconds and then glow constantly. DO NOT
plug it into a USB port on your monitor, as it will not function.
- Click on Start | Programs | Etoken | Etoken Properties as show in the
picture below.

- Click on the Change Password button.
- In the field marked “Current Token Password”, type 1234567890 (this is the preset
factory default password).
- In the field marked “New Token Password” type in a new token password. You will need it
later in the setup process as well as each time you plug
your token in for use. This password will be referred to as your token
password.
- Retype your token password into the “Confirm Token Password” field for verification.
- Click on the OK button.
- Close the Etoken window.
Your token is now ready to accept your digital ID. You can now setup one of the following email clients to use your certificate.
