On November 11, 2020, alumni still using basic authentication on at least one mobile device received an email informing them to update their email client to use modern authentication now. Learn more.

Starting January 4, 2021, password security will be enabled for all UW-Madison alumni email accounts. Enabling password security for alumni accounts will disable basic authentication to help prevent unauthorized access to their email account and NetID credentials from malicious actors. Individuals who do not reconfigure their UW-Madison Office 365 email account on their device(s) by January 4th will lose access to their email using their email clients.

Recommended steps to take by January 4, 2021:

  1. See which devices are still using basic authentication.
  2. Reconfigure email clients that are still using basic authentication.
  3. Enable password security for the UW-Madison email account.

Individuals can still reconfigure their UW-Madison email account to use modern authentication after Jan 4th; however, to minimize disruption to email access it is highly recommended to follow the steps above as soon as possible.

Individuals who are not alumni and are still using basic authentication for their email client will be notified at a later date. Learn more about the Basic Authentication project.
