This document answers some frequently asked questions about NetID account deactivations.
Individuals who are no longer students, faculty, and staff, or who no longer have an official appointment with the university are not eligible for NetIDs. Deactivation is done, in part, to create more space and accounts for people who continue to be part of the UW-Madison community.
Deactivations take place two times a year. After the enroll/drop period for the semester has ended, we evaluate our records to determine users who have left the university. The actual deactivation process takes place mid-semester (typically late March/early April and late October/early November).
Students: You will have access to NetID services from the time of your graduation until the next round of deactivation.
Faculty and Staff: You will have access to the MyUW portal for 2 years after your appointment has ended. You will continue to have WiscMail access until the next round of deactivations.
You will receive email notification a few days before your account is initially deactivated.
Disabled accounts will be eligible for a grace period, which lasts approximately three weeks from the date of deactivation. During the grace period, you will have full access to your services. Visit the NetID Deactivation Assistant to request a grace period.
After the grace period, we completely purge the disabled accounts from our system. You will no longer have access to any of the NetID services, and all mail will be deleted from our system. Any mail that has not been downloaded to your personal computer will be lost.
You can set a forward for your WiscMail account any time up until the end of the grace period. This forward will continue for 6 months after the account has been purged. Forwards cannot be set after the grace period ends. The WiscMail account administrator reserves the right to exclude messages identified as highly likely to be bulk mail (spam) from the allowable forwarded mail. You can set a forward by logging in to the NetID Modification Utility.
If you believe you are still eligible for a NetID, Visit the NetID Deactivation Assistant to contest eligibility. Unacceptable reasons for retaining an active NetID account include:
The easiest way to back up your messages is to set up a mail client and then save your messages locally. There are several supported mail clients that we can assist you with setting up:
Once you have configured your client to read your messages, you will need to back the messages up to your local machine:
You can also export your address book from WiscMail.
