WiscMail / WiscMail Plus (Web) - Validating Digital Signatures


If you receive an email with a digital signature, you can view the signature with the WiscMail web client by following these instructions.

Validate the signature results as it was when was received

Any message that has an S/MIME signature will be scanned and the results will be added to the headers of the message. The results will be displayed in the web client.

Validate the signature on-demand

Digitally signed messages appear with the following image, Signature Icon, located at the end of the subject.

  1. To verify the signature, open the message by clicking the subject.
  2. The digital signature will appear as an attachment. Click the link labeled "Click to validate the signature." to view the signature.
  3. The verification result is displayed in a new window. The result displays the name and email address on the signature, as well as the name of the certificate authority that issued the certificate. If the address in the certificate does not match the sender's address, a warning message is displayed.
Important: To preserve system performance, signed messages greater than 10MB in size cannot be verified. Please use a desktop client to verify these messages.

Trusted Root Authorities

The WiscMail team uses the trusted root certificate authorities used by the Mozilla Thunderbird project. The can be viewed here:

If you receive a signed message that used a certificate issued by an authority which is not included in this list, please let us know via the feedback feature on this page.
