Learn@UW - Rights to Manipulate Navigation Bars and Templates for a Course

This document is for Site Administrators only.

This document explains the rights used to conrol access to the Navigation Bars and Templates for courses.

A course navigation bar contains links to course functions and possibly to some external web pages. A navigation bar template controls the look and feel of a course navigation bar.

The rights to manipulate navigation bars and templates are controlled by two permission settings in the "Course Offering" column of the "Manage Course" group:

Each role can have it's own set of permission settings. The possibilities are:
  1. You can Neither Edit Nav Bars nor Edit Advanced Nav. Bar Functions.

You may neither edit your course navigation bar nor do anything to templates and must use what has been set up for you.

  2. You can Edit Nav Bars but cannot Edit Advanced Nav. Bar Functions.

You may edit your course navigation bar but cannot create or modify templates. You may not create additional navigation bars nor select from among multiple navigation bars.

Selecting Edit Courses->NavBars will take you directly to the "Edit Navigation Bar" page. You can modify your course navigation bar as you wish and you can also specify that your navigation bar use one from among a choice of existing templates. You do have a few controls to modify the look and feel of the navigation bar: You may place white space or HTML between links (e.g., a colored separator bar).

  3. You can Edit Nav Bars and Edit Advanced Nav. Bar Functions.

You may edit your course navigation bar and create and modify templates. You may also create additional navigation bars and have multiple navigation bars available each linked to a particular template.

Selecting Edit Courses->NavBars will take you to a "Manage Navigation Bars" page that is bypassed (inaccessible) when you cannot edit advanced nav. bar functions. The active navigation bar is indicated by a check in the table of navigation bars. Click on a curved X icon ( curved x ) to make the navigation bar you want the active one.

Clicking on a navigation bar link gets you to the "Edit Navigation Bar" page.
