Learn@UW - Potential Problem if Instructors Can Edit Course Navigation Bars

This document is for Site Administrators only.

We have identified a potential problem that may occur if instructors have the permission to edit their course navigation bar, that is, in Roles and Permissions the "Instructor" role can "Edit nav bars" at the "Course Offering Level".

The problem arises when a course uses the organization's default course navigation bar, and the latter contains a custom link. If an instructor deletes the custom link from within their course, the link is also deleted from the default navigation bar and, subsequently, from all courses in the organization that are using the default navigation bar.

This is a known issue.

One way to prevent this problem is not give instructors the permission to edit their course navigation bar. Note that this means the instructor could no longer customize the tools added to their course navigation bar. Instructors would have to contact their site administrators to make any changes to their course navigation bar.

Another option is to educate instructors to remove any unwanted links instead of deleting them by making them inactive:

  1. From the course, select Edit Course and then Nav Bars .

  2. Select the section of your nav. bar that contains the custom link.

  3. Click the custom link (ending with "[C]" under "Current Active Links").

  4. Press the left arrow ( < ) button to move the custom link to the list of "Inactive Links".
Do not press the Delete Link or Edit Link button!!

  5. Press Save.

Edit nav bar

Note: If you want a custom navigation bar link in your course default navigation bar, please use the Problem Reporting/Assistance Request Form to submit a request.
