WiscCal (Blackberry) - Configure SyncML clients

Some vendors are now writing sync clients for some Blackberry devices that can use WiscCal's SyncML sync server. This document discusses them and provides some information to two of these vendors and some possible sync settings one may use to peform syncs between one's Blackberry device and WiscCal.

We have had success with the product from one vendor in our testing of Blackberry/SyncML syncing. It is discussed below with links to their web site and configuration information that has worked for our testers and/or users. You should familiarize yourself with the settings specified in the WiscCal SyncML settings document for the proper SyncML server settings (please refer to it as directed below).

Nexthaus Corporation

Their SyncJe Blackberry Client was successfully installed and tested on our Sprint/Nextel Blackberry 7520 and I have had success using it with the latest Blackberry 8830 product (and version 2.x of the SyncJe client). For this client the sync settings specified in the WiscCal SyncML document above were successful and no other changes to the SyncJE Blackberry client were required. NOTE: Oracle as yet has not certified the v3.x SyncJe client, and we have reports from some users who have attempted to use it that it does not work (it throws a 502 Connection Error and never manages to use the BB networking successfully).

There is one significant Blackberry device setting that you should change, otherwise the Calendar application on the Blackberry will send email notifications to ALL individuals associated with EVERY meeting you sync between WiscCal and the Blackberry.

Nexthaus support gave us this solution to avoid the email notifications and I have confirmed that it works. To resolve the issue, you need to remove CICAL service books from your device. CICAL service books are connectors between BB applications, and in this case they allow the calendar application access to the email application to send email notifications and alerts. If these CICAL service books are removed the calendar will no longer be able to send emails. Regular email will be unaffected, only email sent from the calendar on the device will no longer function. To remove the service books on your Blackberry you need to:

Once you've removed the CICAL entries you should not see any email notifications sent about items in the Blackberry Calendar application. NOTE: with WiscCal this should not be an issue, as you can set email notifications in your WiscCal preferences and let WiscCal send such notifications rather than have the Blackberry do it.

One additional setting is required in the SyncJe settings. You have three Service Provider options, WAP, MDS, and BIS. Your selection will depend on the wireless carrier you use. For US Cellular (which is what my personal work Blackberry uses), you need to select the BIS option to get the connection to the WiscCal Sync server to work correctly. We have had reports from other users that WAP was necessary. Try one or the other -- if it doesn't work (that is, there is no connection when you attempt a sync), then select the other one.
