FWSM - ASDM OS, Browser and Java Requirements

Cisco's firewall manager ASDM has specific browser and Java requirements.

We recently upgraded to ASDM 6.1(5)F which is required to work with the new version of FWSM software we are running. This version of ASDM has many improvements over the previous version, including better performance. Unfortunately it is still particular about the version of Java you are using. Not all versions of Java work equally well with the ASDM.

Please note that the old Microsoft JVM is no longer supported and will not work with the ASDM.

While other versions of Java and different browsers or operating systems may work, only the following combinations are supported.

browser and java requirements

About Mac OS X.

Please note that Mac OS X is not supported by the most recent ASDM version, 6.1(5)F. We had been evaluating an earlier version of the ASDM, 6.1(2)F and the related release notes indicated that the Mac would be a supported platform. Unfortunately the current release notes no longer mention Mac OS X as a supported operating system.

Note that ASDM 6.1(5)F has been found to work on Mac OS X 10.4 using Java version 1.5.0_19. It has also been found to work on Mac OS X 10.5.7 using Java versions 1.5.0_19 and 1.6.0_13 64-bit. It currently does not work on Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard). It may not work on all Mac OS X systems.

There was an problem with one of the Java updates to Mac OS X 10.5+ on 64-bit systems which causes Java WebStart applications to be opened with an XML editor instead of Java. There is a fix described here.

If you are having difficulty with the ASDM but only have access to a Mac OS X system AND need a change made to your firewall please contact the NOC @ 263-4188.
