Bucky Backup - Upgrading the Bucky Backup Client for Windows

This document explains how to upgrade an existing Bucky Backup client for Windows to the latest version of the 5.4.x client. If you have not yet installed the Bucky Backup client on the machine, then see the document Bucky Backup - Installing the Bucky Backup Client for Windows for instructions.

Preparing for the Bucky Backup Client Upgrade

  1. Review the latest 32-bit or 64-bit Readme file.
  2. Confirm that your Windows machine meets the Version 5.5 Bucky Backup Microsoft Windows Client Requirements. Note that DoIT only officially supports what's listed here.
  3. Although it will run on 64-bit operating systems, be aware that DoIT does not officially support 64-bit Windows Server operating systems.
  4. Check the list of known problems and limitations for the Bucky Backup client.

Installing the New Bucky Backup Client

  1. Log onto your machine as Administrator or as someone with administrative privileges.
  2. Go to Start -> Run.
  3. Type cmd and hit Enter.
  4. In the Command Prompt window that appears, type net stop "TSM Scheduler" and hit Enter.

  5. Leave the Command Prompt window open.
  6. Download the appropriate version of Tivoli Storage Manager Client for your operating system:
  7. Double-click on the file you just downloaded. This will extract all the needed installation files to a temporary directory. You can just accept the default location of C:\tsm_images.
  8. After all files are extracted, you will be prompted for a language to run the installer in. English is the only supported language.
  9. Go through the installer, accepting all default configurations.
  10. (Optional) When it’s finished, delete the folder C:\tsm_images & the file 5.4.2.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exe.
  11. In the Command Prompt window, type net start "TSM Scheduler" and hit Enter.

If the service will not start back up, please see this Helpdesk document.
  12. Open the file \Program Files\Tivoli\TSM\baclient\dsmsched.log in your favorite text editor. Look at the bottom of the file for information like this:

The important thing to look at is the “Server Window Start” information. This tells you when your next scheduled backup is supposed to take place. If things don’t look right, please call the Help Desk at 264-HELP (264-4357).
  13. Make sure you leave your computer turned on and the scheduler running during the time that you backups are scheduled to occur.
  14. It is recommended that you read through the Tips for Windows section now.
