How do I know what kind of memory (RAM) I have and how much memory (RAM) do I have in my computer?

Or, you can try the following tool from crucial.com-

Open up your web browser of choice (i.e internet explorer, firefox, etc...)

Type in or copy and paste this address in http://crucial.com/systemscanner/

On this page agree to the terms and conditions by checking that box

Then click the "Download the scanner" button

You will be asked where you would like to save the file. Save it somewhere you can find it easily.

Next go to where you saved the file and open it most likely by double clicking on it.

Your computer may ask you if you would really like to open the file. This file is from a trusted source so you can open it.

After the program runs it will give you a web page full of information on your computer. Somewhere in the middle of the screen look for something that says "Each memory slot can hold xxxxxxx,xxxxxxx with a maximum of xxx per slot.*" This is the information you want to know in order to upgrade your memory.
