This article will teach you how to map a network drive to a server in Windows.
1. The ip address of the selected server on the network. (In Science Hall this will look something like 144.92.235.xxx) If you do not know this information then submit an IRM request or email help@geography.wisc.edu.
2. You will need to know your login information for the server. This is your user name and password. If you do not have a login for a server or have forgotten this information then please submit an IRM request.
Now to map the drive:
Go to My Computer
From the menu select tools, then Map Network Drive...
In the Drive drop down menu select a letter for which the server connection will be saved under (you can choose any letter you prefer)
In the folder blank, type: "\\ipaddressofserver\folder". Where ipaddressofserver is the information from part one up top and folder is the specific folder you want to see on the server.
If you are using your own computer and do not want to repeat this process each time you boot up then check the Reconnect at Logon box.
Next select Connect using a different user name and enter your user name and password. Which is from part 2 up top.
Select finish
Now to connect to the server you can see it in my computer under the letter you choose during the setup phase
If the Drive is mapped but you do not have the appropriate access to files or folders
This means you cannot make files in certain folders you should be able to or you cannot open certain folders
This most likely means that the windows has already connected to the server at some point and thinks you are trying to connect with the user name guest. To remedy this situation you need to disconnect the session the server has with the guest account.
To do this: Open My Computer and go to Tools then Disconnect Network Drive...
A list of drives that are mapped to your computer will be displayed. At this point you need to select any drive that starts with the same ip address as the one you were trying to connect (i.e. 144.92.235.xxx)
After all drives with the same ip address have been disconnected. Restart from the beginning of the document.
If you cannot resolve this issue on your own just submit an IRM request to the help desk and we will gladly help you set up your connection to the server.
