EPD - Technology - Web Conferencing - How to Access Webex Meetings in an EPD Course

This document describes how to join a webex meetings session from an EPD Course

Note: Most EPD courses use Blackboard Ultra as their web conferencing tool. If you see a link to Bb Collaborate Ultra in the left navigation of your course, please see EPD Online Courses - How to Access Blackboard Ultra Web Conferencing

Getting Started

First, access the Webex web conference via the course site/learning management system (LMS). 
  1. Access and log into the online course site.
  2. Go to the Canvas Course Dashboard.
  3. Enter your NetID and password and click Log in.


  4. Locate the appropriate course and click on it.
  5. Click on Live Web Conferences 
  6. This opens a new Webex Meetings page
  7. Click Agree in the prompt to agree to the UW Madison Online Collaboration terms. For more information see Provisional UW–Madison Online Collaboration Session Recording Policy (eff. March 16, 2020).


  8. If you already have Webex installed, this prompt will appear in the desktop client.
  9. Next, you will see a prompt to open the Webex desktop client or enter your name and email address to connect
    • If you do not have Webex installed, you may install the application or click on the join from Web browser link at the bottom of the new page


  10. Enter your name and email address, then in the new window, click Join Meeting
  11. If you are using a web browser to connect, you may see a message notifying you to allow the browser to access audio and video


  12. Click Allow to allow Webex to use the microphone


Using Webex Meetings


You may use your computer for audio, or call in with your phone.

To use your Computer Audio

  • Click on Join Meeting. Your audio will connect automatically

To Call in with a Telephone

  1. Click on Use Computer for Audio 


  2. Select Call In from the drop down


  3. Click Join Meeting to connect

  4. Once you join the conference, click on the phone icon:101670PhoneIcon.png
  5. A new window will display the dial in numbers

The microphone is muted if it is red
The microphone is unmuted if it is dark grey


  • Click on the chat icon to open the chat panel: 101670ChatIcon.png
  • If you are using the desktop app, you can click on the dropdown to determine whether to send the chat to Everyone
  • or specific individuals
  • If you are using a web browser, you can chat with all
