Web Hosting - Distributed Denial of Service attacks (DDoS) Protections

Distributed Denial of Service attacks are a common and major concern for web hosting providers. DoIT's Web Hosting Service leverages several techniques to mitigate attacks.
DoIT Web Hosting has rate limiting the number of incoming connections allowed to the website with exemptions for UW-Madison IP space.
Some sites can produce all high-volume events that are not DDoS attacks so there is a delicate balance of abating the malicious traffic but not impacting legitimate traffic to customer web sites.
Several layers and tools are employed to maintain protections--these include:
  • Palo Alto
  • Mod Security
  • Fail2Ban
  • Firewall Protections
If you believe you experiencing blocks to a DoIT Web Hosting site that are legitimate requests please reach out to webhosting@doit.wisc.edu
