Leadership & Appointed Positions / ASM
There are many opportunities for involvement with ASM through leadership or appointed roles. The following is a listing of the leadership and committee roles available within the organization. Each role is linked to a full position description.
Student Council Leadership
The positions below are appointed by Student Council at the start of each new session of ASM on April 24th. Students who are interested in running for these positions generally meet with newly-elected Student Council representatives in advance of the April 24th Student Council meeting, give a short speech during open forum at the meeting, and then the decision is voted on by Student Council.

You must be an elected Student Council representative to be eligible for:
ASM Chair
Acts as the official spokesperson of the ASM, presides over the ASM Student Council, facilitates meetings with the UW administration and leadershipASM Vice Chair
Presides over the Coordinating Council; coordinates, appoints and leads ASM travel; maintains oversight and administration of the ASM internal budgetASM Secretary
Maintains the official records for ASM, records the proceedings of each meeting of Student CouncilInternal Affairs Chair
Coordinates the advertising and hiring process for ASM positions, including appointed positions, student hourly positions, and ASM professional staff
Any enrolled student is eligible to run for:
Anti-Violence Chair
Works alongside other organizations on campus to break down the oppressive nature of sexual violence and other forms of violence on campus.Diverse Engagement Chair
Organizes and leads outreach initiatives and campaigns to improve ASM’s engagement with multicultural and identity-based student organizationsEquity & Inclusion Chair
Helps facilitate meetings and campaigns of the Justice, Equity & Belonging Committee, which works to establish a safer and more inclusive campus climateLegislative Affairs Committee Chair
Facilitates meetings and campaigns of the Legislative Affairs Committee, which lobbies policy makers on higher education issuesPress Office Director
Coordinates messaging for the organization through press releases and media inquiries; in partnership with the Outreach Director, coordinates efforts of the Campus Relations Committee to develop ASM media relations, messaging & outreach strategiesShared Governance Committee Chair
Appoints students to university and city government committees; in partnership with the Shared Governance Campaign Director, facilitates meetings and campaignsSustainability Campaign Coordinator
Responsible for outreach and connection with sustainability-related organizations and entities on campus, to facilitate conversation and collaboration between them.Sustainability Committee Chair
Facilitates meetings and campaigns of the Sustainability Committee, which works on environmental sustainability issues on campusVote Coordinator
Increases student voter access by working with the City of Madison Clerk's Office to implement in-person absentee voting on campus and serving as a liaison for campus-wide voting efforts
Students who are appointed to the following committees are eligible to run for these roles:
Student Activity Center Governing Board (SACGB) Chair
Plan and facilitate efforts of the SAC Governing Board to oversee a facility use policy and allocate SAC office, storage, and mailbox spaceGrant Allocation Committee (GAC) Chair
Facilitates efforts of the Grant Allocation Committee which is responsible for awarding grants to Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) for operations, events, and travel
Additional Leadership Positions
The following leadership positions are elected within the committee. You must be elected or appointed to the committee to be eligible for:
Grant Allocation Committee Vice Chair
Serves as the record keeper for the Grant Allocation Committee and supports the efforts of the GAC ChairStudent Activity Center Governing Board (SACGB) Vice Chair
Serves as the record keeper for SACGB and supports the efforts of the SACGB ChairStudent Election Commission Chair
Promotes and runs the ASM student elections each spring; appointed by the Student JudiciaryStudent Judiciary – Chief Justice
Facilitates the efforts of the Student Judiciary to review and decide on student appeals involving space allocations, financial allocations, and ASM electionsStudent Judiciary – Vice Chief Justice
Serves as the record keeper for the Student Judiciary; supports efforts of the Chief JusticeStudent Services Finance Committee (SSFC) Chair
Facilitates the efforts of SSFC to determine annual funding levels for student organizations within the General Student Services Fund, approves ASM administrative budgets, provides student recommendations for University Health Services, Recreational Sports, and the Wisconsin UnionStudent Services Finance Committee (SSFC) Secretary
Serves as the record keeper for SSFCStudent Services Finance Committee (SSFC) Vice Chair
Is responsible for the internal coordination of SSFC, facilitates meetings of the Student Transportation Board, supports the efforts of the SSFC Chair
Appointed Positions
The following positions are selected by the ASM Nominations Board and confirmed through Student Council. Students submit online applications for these positions and interview with the Nominations Board, either in the spring or fall of each year.
Positions generally filled in the spring:
Grant Allocation Committee (GAC) Member
Contributes to the efforts of the GAC which is responsible for awarding grants to Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) for operations, events, and travelStudent Activity Center Governing Board (SACGB) At-Large Member
Contributes to the efforts of the SACGB to oversee facility use policy and allocate office, storage, and mailbox space in the SACStudent Services Finance Committee (SSFC) At-Large Member
Determines annual funding levels for student organizations housed within the General Student Services Fund; approves ASM administrative budgets; provides student recommendations for University Health Services, Recreational Sports, and the Wisconsin Union
Positions generally filled in the fall:
Student Judiciary – Associate Justice
The Student Judiciary reviews and decides on student appeals involving space allocations, financial allocations, and ASM electionsStudent Judiciary – General Counsel
Advises individuals, organizations, and ASM bodies during their appeal process with the Student Judiciary
