Box - Accessibility & Usability Information

This document summarizes the accessibility and usability barriers identified during testing the Box file management app, as well as recommendations for how to get help.

UW-Madison provides free online file storage and collaboration service using Box cloud file storage. Read this document for a summary of the accessibility and usability barriers identified during testing the Box file management app, as well as recommendations and how to get help.

Box provides two different versions of the file manager:

  • Box (main version)-  This version has accessibility barriers that may cause difficulty for some users with disabilities, as listed below.
  • Box (alternate “accessible” version) (which can be reached by going to http://a.box.com)- This version is intended to be more accessible for users with disabilities. However, this functionality is limited and not inclusive of all functional options available in the main version.

Box (Main Version) - Accessibility & usability barriers

The following information is provided to help people with disabilities know what potential barriers may exist with Box.

Some keyboard navigation barriers may be difficult for people with vision or motor disabilities

The focus indicator is missing or has very low contrast on some elements, such as tabs within account settings, and “help” and “notification” buttons.

Magnification and interface barriers may be difficult for people with low vision

When magnified above 200%, it may be difficult to see all of the file manager content. Certain elements, such as the navigation bar, have a fixed position which blocks content when magnified. Some links on the navigation bar also disappear when magnified.

Screen reader accessibility barriers may impact users who are blind or have low vision and are using a screen reader or other assistive technology

When navigating via screen reader, the “Open” button to open a file may open the “More Options” or “Download” button instead. Users can access this functionality in the file manager by going to the “More Options (…)” button after the file name. This button has a sub-menu including the “Open With” option.

Box (Accessible Version) - Accessibility & usability barriers

Missing functionality between main version and the “accessible version” may impact the ability of all users to reach their goals or complete high priority tasks

Some buttons or folder functionality is missing in the “accessible version.” This includes:

  • Missing elements in the navigation bar (such as “Recents”, “Synced”, “Trash”, and “Notes”)
  • Missing buttons (“Get Help,” “Tasks” and “Notifications”)
  • Missing profile options

Color contrast barriers may be difficult for people with low vision or who are colorblind

Items in the footer are low contrast and may be difficult to see and use for people who are colorblind or have low vision.
