The University of Wisconsin System is one of the largest systems of public higher education in the country, serving more than 170,000 students each year and employing approximately 39,000 faculty and staff statewide.
The UW System is made up of 13 four-year universities and 13 two-year branch campuses affiliated with seven of the four-year institutions. On July 1, 2018, the former UW-Extension joined with UW-Madison and UW System Administration. Together, these institutions are a tremendous academic, cultural, and economic resource for Wisconsin, the nation, and the world.
Raymond W. Cross is UW System president, and began his tenure in February 2014.The University of Wisconsin System Mission
"The mission of this system is to develop human resources, to discover and disseminate knowledge, to extend knowledge and its application beyond the boundaries of its campuses, and to serve and stimulate society by developing in students heightened intellectual, cultural, and humane sensitivities; scientific, professional, and technological expertise and a sense of purpose. Inherent in this broad mission are methods of instruction, research, extended training and public service designed to educate people and improve the human condition. Basic to every purpose of the system is the search for truth."
