Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 nearing end of support

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 nearing end of support

On November 30, 2020, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 will require extended lifecycle support from Red Hat to receive security updates: https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata/#Life_Cycle_Dates

In March 2021, Oracle Linux 6 will require extended support from Oracle to receive security updates: https://www.oracle.com/a/ocom/docs/elsp-lifetime-069338.pdf

Our current Oracle Linux contract includes Oracle Linux 6 (and RHEL 6) premier support until March 2021. That means that there won't be a need to purchase extended support to receive security updates until March 2021. We're working with Oracle and Red Hat to determine pricing for RHEL 6 support beyond March 2021. We hope to have more information to share about extended support options, including costs, in late October or early November.

We recommend that all customers currently running workloads under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 migrate to CentOS, Oracle Linux, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 or 8.

It's worth noting that while Oracle will continue to provide security updates for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 until March 2021, some vendors may stop supporting their applications under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 on November 30, 2020. Check with your application vendor to ensure that Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 continues to be a supported platform after November 30, 2020.

SE is contacting customers and scheduling meetings to discuss next steps for customers with workloads running under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6. If you'd like to discuss options now, please reach out to us at linux@doit.wisc.edu.
