General Student Services Fund - Fringe Calculation
Last updated 12/11/2020
Fringe is additional money required for all state employees to cover health care and social security costs.
Student Staff: fringe should not be included for student employees during the academic year. For students working during the summer, Fringe should not be included if the student is enrolled in classes full-time. Fringe MUST be included for any student employees working during the summer but not attending classes.
Professional Staff (Advisors or Graduate PAs): Fringe must be included for all University Professional Staff who are paid through a GSSF budget. For full-time staff, these calculations can be complex, please connect with the Assistant Director of Financial Services in ASM to ensure you calculate these correctly.
To calculate fringe for students, the multiplier is usually between 3-5%.
The formula to calculate fringe:
Hours Worked per Week | X | Weeks Worked (summer) | X | Salary/Wage | X | Fringe Multiplier (5%) | = | Fringe Total |
15 | x | 10 | x | $10.50 | x | .05% | = | $78.75 |
An example has been included below the formula for someone who works 15 hours per week for 10 weeks during the summer at $10.50 per hour.
