Summer 2021 career development training

The Career Development series provides the opportunity for graduate program coordinators to build a basic understanding of career development theory and practices and explore how they might apply these in their programs.

SERIES GOALS:

The purpose of this series is to increase graduate students’ access to career planning expertise at the program level, by building basic career development knowledge and referral skills in graduate program coordinators. The intent is not to train graduate program coordinators as career services professionals; rather, through active participation, graduate program coordinators will build knowledge and skills that allow them to have career-related conversations and provide referrals for graduate students considering careers outside of the academy. This series is optional for graduate program coordinators.

WORKSHOPS

Helping Your Grad Students Find and Apply for Federal and State Government Jobs
Wednesday, June 16, 2021
Presenter: Marie Koko, Coordinator of Career Services, Robert M La Follette School of Public Affairs

Do you work with Masters or PhD students who express an interest in looking at jobs with state or federal government agencies, but find that neither you (nor they) have any idea where to begin? Have you heard that there is a “federal resume” but really don’t know what that means? Would you like to just talk through some of the questions you’ve run into so that you feel more confident guiding students into looking at these “outside the academy” opportunities?  Then this is the Zoom for you!  Marie Koko has 12 years of experience in guiding students into roles in state and federal agencies and after a short presentation, will open the floor to your questions so we can make the most of our time together. You can also enter questions in advance, in the registration form, and we will do our best to incorporate them into the presentation.

Virtual Career Conversations: Enhancing Your Effectiveness
Monday, July 19, 2021 - 9:00am-12:00pm
Presenter: Judy Ettinger, Senior Outreach Specialist, Wisconsin Center for Education Research

Although we have been using remote forms of communication for many years, the pandemic and the need to quarantine have forced us to work with our students and colleagues in different ways. We’ve had to reinvent and rethink the ways we build and maintain relationships. The skills needed to communicate in this way are no longer a choice or a luxury; they are a necessity. Most of us have not had the opportunity to define the skills needed nor have had the opportunity to practice them and receive feedback from our colleagues when it comes to video conferencing and video meetings with students. The instructor(s) will present on the following issues and provide opportunities for practice, critiquing, and provision of feedback:

  • Ways to engage in active listening skills while online
  • Skills associated with video conferencing when talking about career-related issues
  • Ethical issues that can arise from remote relationships that focus on career topics
This event has already taken place. Presenter slides are available.
