Helping Your Grad Students Find and Apply for Federal and State Government Jobs

Do you work with Masters or PhD students who express an interest in looking at jobs with state or federal government agencies, but find that neither you (nor they) have any idea where to begin? Have you heard that there is a “federal resume” but really don’t know what that means? Would you like to just talk through some of the questions you’ve run into so that you feel more confident guiding students into looking at these “outside the academy” opportunities?  Then this is the Zoom for you!  Marie Koko has 12 years of experience in guiding students into roles in state and federal agencies and after a short presentation, will open the floor to your questions so we can make the most of our time together. You can also enter questions in advance, in the registration form, and we will do our best to incorporate them into the presentation.

Career Development Practices: A Guide for Grad Coordinators

Graduate coordinators who enroll in this workshop will gain knowledge about career development practices and related tools, practice interviewing skills, and develop confidence when having career conversations with graduate students. Both new and continuing coordinators will find the workshop helpful either as an introduction to career development or as a refresher course.  The agenda will focus on the following:

• A basic understanding of career development theory(ies) that can be used to guide interactions with graduate students that are primarily held remotely
• Examination of conversations held remotely with graduate students about career plans
• Best practices used by fellow Graduate Coordinators

Although we have been using remote forms of communication for many years, the pandemic and the need to quarantine have forced us to work with our students and colleagues in different ways. We’ve had to reinvent and rethink the ways we build and maintain relationships. The skills needed to communicate in this way are no longer a choice or a luxury; they are a necessity. Most of us have not had the opportunity to define the skills needed nor have had the opportunity to practice them and receive feedback from our colleagues when it comes to video conferencing and video meetings with students. The instructor(s) will present on the following issues and provide opportunities for practice, critiquing, and provision of feedback:

• Ways to engage in active listening skills while online
• Skills associated with video conferencing when talking about career-related issues
• Ethical issues that can arise from remote relationships that focus on career topics
