Globus Storage Collections
Globus Storage Collections are discoverable access points that allow data to be transferred through GridFTP or HTTPS.
Sharing data with Globus
Globus allows you to share data with external collaborators using their own institutional account credentials or allows external collaborators to share data with you using your UW-Madison NetID credentials.
- Login to the Globus website with your UW-Madison NetID.
- Accept the Globus Consent Prompt.
- Click the Collections menu on the left then search for the name of the ResearchDrive Globus Guest Collection.
- Click the ResearchDrive Guest Collection in the search results then select the Permissions tab.
- Click the Add Permissions - Share With button.
- Select the folder path that you want to share.
- Add your collaborator's email address to the Username or Email search field.
- Optionally send the collaborator an email then click Add Permission.
- Verify that the collaborator was added on the Permissions tab.
Sharing restricted data with Globus High Assurance
Additional security controls are required to transfer restricted data like HIPAA or CUI with Globus.
- Globus has undergone a risk assessment by the Office of Cybersecurity Risk Management and Compliance and is included on The Office of Compliance Approved Tools for Exchanging and Storing PHI.
- Secure access and management of data at UW-Madison is subject to the Cybersecurity Risk Management Policy UW-503. As stated in policy UW-503, it is the responsibility of the faculty and staff to understand the security risk associated with their data projects. Proper classification of data and consequently proper use of storage tools for their research work, teaching/learning and administration is the responsibility of the researcher/faculty/staff.
- Additional security controls are required to use restricted data like HIPAA or CUI with Globus. Restricted data, may only be stored, with approval, in specific Globus High Assurance Endpoints that have access managed by authorized data administrators. In addition, workstations used to access and store PHI must meet specific security guidelines. See the Office of Cybersecurity Risk Management and Compliance for more details.
- Login to the Globus website with your UW-Madison NetID.
- Accept the Globus Consent Prompt.
- Click the File Manager menu on the left then enter the name of the ResearchDrive Guest Collection in the Collection searchbox.
- Click the Collections menu on the left then search for the name of the ResearchDrive Globus Guest Collection.
- Click the ResearchDrive Guest Collection in the search results then select the Permissions tab.
- Click the Add Permissions - Share With button.
- Select the folder path that you want to share.
- Add your collaborator's email address to the Username or Email search field.
- Optionally send the collaborator an email then click Add Permission.
- Verify that the collaborator was added on the Permissions tab.
