The McArdle Laboratory has 22 independent research laboratories. These laboratories, however, share intellectual goals, reagents, and equipment.

The goals for the McArdle Lab for Cancer Research are to pursue outstanding research programs directed toward understanding the causes and biology of cancer and the factors that regulate normal and neoplastic growth and differentiation and to provide training of the highest quality in basic cancer research at the graduate and postdoctoral levels.

Different areas of study include: Cancer Virology, Tumor Biology, Signal Transduction, Cell Cycle, Cancer Genetics, Chemical Carcinogenesis.

McArdle was the first basic science cancer center in an academic institution in the US, founded in 1940.
