Per state law, concealed carry of weapons by individuals who are properly permitted is allowed throughout the state, including on campus grounds. The law allows members of the public to carry concealed firearms (with a permit), knives, tasers and billy clubs, except in areas where expressly prohibited by law. In addition, the law provides the university may continue to ban concealed weapons in:
  • Campus buildings
  •  Athletic events
  • Campus events
  • Where appropriate signage has been posted
The following procedure should be used for students needing to safely store their firearms. Please note NO FIREARMS ARE ALLOWED IN ANY UW RESIDENCE HALL OR UNIVERSITY HOUSE OR CAMPUS BUILDINGS. If you wish to keep your firearms with you on campus you must log them in with the UW Police Department for safekeeping. Below is an outline of the procedure
  1. Bring the firearm (UNLOADED) secured in a firearms case, along with a photo ID card to the UW Police Department at 1429 Monroe St.
  2. Turn over the (UNLOADED) firearm to a UW Police Officer. The Police Officer will return your ID and firearm case to you and secure your (UNLOADED) weapon in our armory.
  3. The Police Officer will issue you a receipt card documenting the specific firearm you turned over to us for storage. Keep this card in a safe location because you will need it to get your firearm back.
Please remember that all firearms in Wisconsin must be unloaded and in a proper firearms case in order to transport. The UW Police Department will NOT return your firearm to you if you do not have a firearm case with you to transport it in. Also, they strongly recommend calling the UW Police Department at 608-264-2677 before arriving to log the weapon in or out in order to insure a Police Officer is available to assist you.
