Chair Sandgren called the meeting to order at 1:25.
Heather Daniels, Secretary of the Faculty, shared a plan to standardize committee listings in Chapter 6 of Faculty Policies and Procedures. Standardization will take place as annual reports are presented in Faculty Senate. The University Committee reviewed a revised procedures document for grievances and decided to not include a statute of limitations.
The minutes of the meeting of August 16, 2021 were approved by consent.
Karen Massetti-Moran from the Office of Human Resources reported that the transition to single pay has gone well so far. There will be another transition once 9-month appointments begin in late August. UW-Madison approved 781 short-term loans to help bridge the gap in paychecks.
Karl Scholz, Provost, reported that a new position will work in Beth Meyerand’s office to work on national and international faculty awards. UW-Madison is ranked 4th by Washington Monthly (ranked first in public universities) on the basis of research excellence, community/national service, and social mobility. The Academic Rankings of World Universities has UW-Madison at 31st in the world and 21st in the United States. The Center for Teaching, Learning and Mentoring website is live at www.ctlm.wisc.edu
Chancellor Blank and Provost Scholz discussed how the vaccine affected opening plans this year compared to last year. Vaccination rates for faculty/staff are over 90% total and 97% for faculty. The student vaccination rate is over 80%. Hospitalizations are 29 times greater for non-vaccinated.
Provost Scholz reported that Purdue and Penn State begin in-person instruction a week ago and students are complying with regulations and are very enthusiastic about being in person.
In regards to accommodation requests, 31 have been received and about 1/3 of these are still in progress. Half of the requests have been approved so far.
Papp moved to convene in closed session; it was seconded and approved at 2:45. One dual role waiver and four tenure clock extensions were approved.
Sandgren moved to reconvene in open session; it was seconded and approved at 3:02.
Chair Sandgren adjourned the meeting at 3:16.
