Data restricted for sharing
When participants complete the Understanding Speech Behavior consent form, they are asked if their data can be used for future research. On old paper copies, they would initial to say "Yes, you can use my data for future studies." On newer paper copies, and on the digital version of the USB consent form, they select Yes or No.
If a participant says "No," we mark their data, so that we don't accidentally use their data in a way that the participant did not consent to. This marking is done by putting a file called data-restricted-for-sharing.txt
in the same folder as dataVals.mat
and expt.mat
. This file only exists for participants who said "No" or did not initial.
All participants who completed consent forms prior to March 18, 2025 have been marked if they did not consent to sharing their data. It is a monthly recurring task of the lab manager to review the new consent forms for people who said "No" or did not initial.
The complete content of data-restricted-for-sharing.txt follows:
Participant [sp000] completed the Understanding Speech Behavior consent form on MM/DD/YYYY and {did not initial (thereby saying NO) // selected NO} next to the following question. Thus, the sharing of their data is restricted:
"[W]e may wish to store your experiment data (speech recordings and task responses) indefinitely for future research. If you have a communication disorder, we will also store the information we request from your medical record. If you agree, we will keep the data that we collect today so that we can continue to ask research questions about it. We will label your data with a code and keep it separate from your contact information. We may wish to share the data with research collaborators outside UW-Madison, but in this case we will provide only the speech data, not your contact information or the code. The main risk is a potential loss of privacy. We will protect your privacy by keeping the data on a password-protected computer. You can withdraw your consent at any time by asking us to remove your data from our database.
Please indicate if you consent for your speech data to be stored for future research."
