Cable Modem - Resetting / Recycling the Modem

It is sometimes necessary to "Reset" a cable modem by powering it off and back on again for it to regain a valid IP and network settings.

Problem

You may need to restart the cable modem if your home computer is unable to retrieve a valid IP address or there is an interruption in service that is not resolved by checking network settings and restarting your computer. This advice is only applicable if you are using a cable internet provider such as Charter (in the Madison area).

Solution

Recycling the cable modem may solve the connectivity issue. To do so:

  1. Unplug the power cord at the back of the modem.
  2. Wait 20 seconds and plug the power cord back in.
  3. Wait for the modem to re-sync up with internet service provider. This could take a minute or so.
  4. Do not unplug the coaxial cable.

If you continue to have trouble with your home internet connection after trying these steps, contact your internet service provider for further assistance.
