SERIES GOALS

The purpose of this series is to increase graduate students’ access to career planning expertise at the program level, by building basic career development knowledge and referral skills in graduate program coordinators/managers. The intent is not to train graduate program coordinators/managers as career services professionals; rather, through active participation, graduate program coordinators/managers will build knowledge and skills that allow them to have career-related conversations and provide referrals for graduate students considering careers outside of the academy. This series is optional for graduate program coordinators/managers.

Scaling Career Support to Prepare More Master’s Students for Career Success

Beginning in July, the Graduate School will sponsor a new institutional membership with Beyond Graduate School, a career platform specifically for master's students! This information session introduces Graduate Program Coordinators/Managers and career services staff to the new platform.

In this webinar, Dr. L. Maren Wood, PhD, will share research and insights about the unique professional development needs of master's students. Master's students are career-focused, seeking out additional education and training to help them build their chosen careers. Yet, 50% of master's students lack foundational knowledge about job searching, and 56% feel uncertain about their futures. Based on our research, our team has developed a curriculum to help master's students successfully job search so they can leverage their education and training to build meaningful careers. Dr. Wood will provide an overview of the Beyond Graduate School platform and curriculum and strategies that faculty and staff can use to effectively utilize this resource when preparing master's students for career and job search success.

Most of us are familiar with the questions asked during a first and second job interview.  However, in 2022 many employers are using Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) that have resulted in changes to the job search.  Many of those same companies also use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to sort through applicants.  The process is very different… what is required of applicants is very different… and therefore, the way we coach our students must be different.  This workshop will describe

• what these digital systems look like,
• what those systems look for from applicants,
• what skills students need to survive and,
• how we can coach students to understand and sharpen those skills.

We tend to rely on traditional types of assessment such as interest inventories and values clarification activities to discover potential career paths and places of employment that might be a good fit.  Our discussions and presentations during this training will take us away from those familiar approaches and will turn a fresh eye to strategies that involve writing, acting, visioning, and literature, with the goal of inspiring satisfying career decisions.

During the workshop you will hear presentations and have an opportunity to apply what you have learned.  We will focus on:

• a way to use writing and journaling to create self-awareness,
• your natural creative inclinations to clarify your sense of self, and
• the use of acting skills to clarify and problem-solve.
