Campus Active Directory - Service Description

This document gives an overview of the Campus Active Directory service.

The Campus Active Directory service is an implementation of Active Directory for the UW-Madison campus. The Active Directory will allow participating departments to take advantage of centralized NetID-based authentication and authorization while allowing for delegated administration of local resources. This allows departmental IT administrators to assign group policies, deploy software, and apply critical updates to an organization's resources without sacrificing the convenience of NetID authentication.

Active Roles Server (ARS) is an add-on component that enables automation of Active Directory object creation workflow, rights provisioning, and adds additional reporting features on the Campus Active Directory for administrators. This service went live in October, 2014.

Support Conditions

The DoIT Help Desk will provide local users with standard NetID login support only. This includes assisting users who are unable to login with their NetID and password. End users with issues relating to departmental workstations, local logins, and all other department-specific problems should contact their local support staff for further issue.

The DoIT Help Desk will also provide support for participating departmental IT administrators who are using the Campus Active Directory service.

The Campus Active Directory service should be available 24 hours per day, 7 days a week. However, there is a regularly scheduled maintenance window on Wednesdays from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM.

The Campus Active Directory service is primarily intended for Windows workstations. However, there has been some success in integrating Mac OS X with Active Directory.
