Course Objectives:CO1: Understand and remember key concepts for management of large animal emergencies, including cardiovascular support, orthopedic stabilization, resuscitation techniques, and application of time-sensitive diagnostic tools.
CO2: Demonstrate surgical techniques, the proper use and application of diagnostic tools, and the ability to interpret the data obtained for the management of large animal diseases and injuries.
CO3: Understand the relationships and interconnectivity of emergency medicine across species.
CO4: Develop techniques to foster an interest in veterinary emergency medicine and trauma management.
CO5: Foster the ability to develop an emergency treatment plan as well as the knowledge of the resources available to formulate that plan and provide timely treatment for large animal patients.

Unit Objectives:

UNIT TITLE: Circulatory Emergencies

UO1: Students will be able to identify objective and subjective findings that are consistent with a lack of adequate circulatory volume.
UO2: Students will be able to interpret clinical exam findings and hematology results to estimate the volume needed and type of replacement fluids.
UO3: Students will be able to design a fluid replacement plan, including monitoring tools, volume needed, rate, and type of fluids required.
UO4: Students will be able to apply physical, pharmacologic, and/or holistic methods appropriately to halt acute hemorrhage.
UO5: Students will be able to perform a stall-side cross match, perform a blood transfusion, recognize transfusion reactions, and select appropriate treatments for prevention and therapeutic intervention.
