Terms commonly used by the LEG Team and Noncredit Course Developers

People Roles


Learning Engineer

A member of the DCS Learning Engineering Group. This includes people with specialties in pedagogic consultation and online course builds.

Lead Instructor (LI)

The primary course instructor

Noncredit Course Developer

A member of a campus noncredit unit working on the development of (new) courses.

Noncredit Learning Experience Team

The team of the DCS noncredit unit working with developed courses and noncredit learners.

Services


Digital Badging

The process of awarding a digital badge in alignment with campus policy.

Instructional Design

The creation of online learning experiences and content resulting in the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills.

Note: This is not content creation by subject matter experts, but rather the creation of online learning experiences and materials using the content created by the subject matter experts.

Instructional Media Production

Capturing high quality video (or audio), editing the captured media, publishing the captured media.

Noncredit Course Development

Work done by the noncredit course developer and the subject matter expert to create and curate the content that will be shared with the learning engineer to be built in the online LMS (e.g. Canvas).

Online Course Build (aka LEG Course Development)

Work done in collaboration between the noncredit course developer, the subject matter expert, and the learning engineer to move content created and curated by the subject matter expert in the scope as defined by the noncredit course developer into the online LMS (e.g. Canvas) by the learning engineer.

Pedagogic Consulting

Consultation on the design of learning materials and experiences to make use of best practices in online and/or hybrid instruction.

Note: This is not content creation by subject matter experts, but rather consultation on how that content might most effectively be shaped into learning experiences and materials to be used by learners.

Key Terms


Digital Badge

A validated indicator of accomplishment, skill, quality, or interest that can be earned by successful completion of a learning experience AND can be shared online, generally through a badging entity (e.g.Badgr).

Emerging Trends in Technology Enhanced/Enabled Learning

Research-based findings regarding improved techniques for online and hybrid learning experiences and instructional approaches.

Hybrid Classrooms

Classrooms set up specifically to accommodate in-person and remote participants.

Learners

Individuals who are enrolled in a learning experience, working toward acquiring and/or applying knowledge and skills.

Learning Experience

A noncredit experience designed for the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills. This may, but need not, model the format of a noncredit "course."

Professional Development

Creating, curating, and delivering content on the best practices for online and hybrid teaching to the instructors teaching in noncredit partner units.

Quality Review

The process of checking a course to ensure that it meets minimum quality standards.

Learning Experience Formats


Asynchronous

A learning experience that learners complete in their own time on their own schedule.

Hybrid Instruction

A learning experience format that incorporates both online and asynchronous and live/synchronous learning sessions.

Instructor-Paced

A course that learners complete on a schedule defined by the course instructor/facilitator.

Learner-Paced

A course that learners can complete any time within a given window of time.

Online

A learning experience that is entirely online.

Synchronous

A learning experience that learners engage in at the same time, either virtually or face-to-face, that is facilitated by a subject matter expert.

Standards/Policies


Inclusivity Standards

In alignment with best practices in inclusive standards for online and hybrid instruction (e.g. proper use of formatting, captioning, alternative text, etc.).

Instructional Standards

In alignment with best practices in online and hybrid instruction.

Legal Compliance for Technology Enabled Learning

Campus recommendations regarding what is needed in order to be fully legally compliant with laws regarding online and hybrid learning experiences.

Policy for Technology Enabled Learning

Campus-wide policies as related to technology enabled learning, such as learning experiences in online (Canvas) and hybrid formats.

Quality Standards

A widely accepted list of standards for quality online and hybrid learning experiences.

Course Templates


Behavioral Health Course Template

A customized template developed by the Behavioral Health program to aid their subject matter experts in creating content for learning experiences. This course template may take into consideration items the learning engineering team will ask about during the discovery meeting and course build process.

Canvas Course Template

A template for Canvas that uses consistent style guides that is used by the learning engineer when building a noncredit learning experience based on the content created and curated by the subject matter expert at the scope defined by the noncredit course developer.

Course Development Template

Any number of helpful development templates, with integrated best practices of online instruction and quality assurance considerations, designed to help subject matter experts communicate their content to the learning engineer.

Languages Course Template

A customized template developed by the languages program to aid their subject matter experts in creating content for learning experiences. This course template may take into consideration items the learning engineering team will ask about during the discovery meeting and course build process.

LMOWS Course Template

A customized template developed by the Behavioral Health program to aid their subject matter experts in creating content for learning experiences. This course template may take into consideration items the learning engineering team will ask about during the discovery meeting and course build process.
