Academic Staff and Faculty Back-Up Appointments in the Division of Extension

This article outlines who is eligible for backup appointments in the Division of Extension.

Division of Extension administrators who transitioned into UW-Madison with tenured faculty back-up appointments and were tenured under UW-Extension are members of the Department of Extension Faculty (DEF). Individuals hired from outside the UW are not eligible for back-up appointments, and do not have a faculty back-up unless they are hired with a tenure requirement for the position and approved through a Divisional Committee Review at the time of hire (i.e., dean, academic associate dean). Moving forward, those who do have a faculty back-up will be treated like other academic administrators at UW-Madison with faculty back-up appointments (i.e., dean, associate deans, etc.).  Details can be found at UWS 15.01 Limited Appointments.

Faculty appointed to limited positions are required to go through a comprehensive review process every five years to determine if they will be reappointed into their administrative role or return to their faculty appointment. If a decision is made to return to their full-time faculty role, they would be reviewed under the guidelines of the Department of Extension Faculty. See UW System Administrative Policy 1251.
