How to RDP into a Windows Computer (From a Windows/Mac/Chrome OS Computer)

This article shows how to RDP into an AIMS, Union, or Housing computer. (Audience: All Customers)

Initial Steps

  1. Make sure you are on the campus network either via a hardwired connection on campus or via GlobalProtect (utilizing the uwmadison.vpn.wisc.edu portal).

  2. Go to the relevant section based on the OS of your system.

Windows

  1. Open the Start Menu and search for Remote Desktop Connection. Open it.
  2. Click Show Options in the Remote Desktop Connection box.
  3. Enter the Fully Qualified Domain Name of the workstation you are trying to connect to in the Computer field:
    * Replace *Computer Tag Number* with the tag number of the computer you are trying to connect to (ex.  AIMS10115 / DOIT11352) *
    1. AIMS users:
      1. *Computer Tag Number*.aims.wisc.edu
    2. Housing users
      1. Computer Tag Number*.housing.wisc.edu
    3. Union users:
      1. *Computer Tag Number*.ad.wisc.edu
  4. In the User name: field, enter your username:
    1. AIMS Users: aims\bbadger
    2. Housing users: housing\bbadger
    3. Union users: bbadger


  5. Click Connect.
  6. Enter your password in the Windows Security popup.
  7. Click OK.
  8. Click Yes if you see the following prompt:
    Remote Desktop Connection prompt

  9. When you are ready to terminate the remote session, please Log Off instead of Disconnecting from or Locking the workstation.

    Mac

    1. Open the Mac App Store and search for Microsoft Remote Desktop (also available here).
    2. Download and install the application. If you already have the application installed, proceed to the next step.
    3. Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop from your Mac's Applications folder.


    4. After launching the Remote Desktop application, click "Add PC" to create a new connection and launch the configuration screen.


    5. Enter the Fully Qualified Domain Name of the workstation you are trying to connect to in the PC Name field: 
      * Replace *Computer Tag Number* with the tag number of the computer you are trying to connect to (ex.  AIMS10115 / DOIT11352) *
        1. AIMS users:
          1. *Computer Tag Number*.aims.wisc.edu
        2. Housing users
          1. Computer Tag Number*.housing.wisc.edu
        3. Union users:
          1. *Computer Tag Number*.ad.wisc.edu



    6. To initiate the remote desktop connection, double click the connection. You may get a security certificate warning when trying to connect. Click "continue" to proceed.


    7. When prompted for credentials:
      1. In the Username field, enter your username (see below for format for your domain):
        1. AIMS users:  aims\bbadger
        2. Housing Users:  housing\bbadger
        3. Union Users: bbadger
    8. When in the remote computer hit fn+control+option+delete to bring up the menu to select Change a password.
       - (In case above key combination does work, try: fn+command+option+delete)
      1. Use the temp password used to sign in to reset to a password of your choosing.
    9. When you are ready to terminate the remote session, please Log Off instead of Disconnecting from or Locking the workstation.  

    ChromeOS

    1. Launch the Google Play store and search for Microsoft Remote Desktop (also available here:  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.rdc.androidx&hl=en_US&gl=US). Download and install the application. If you already have the application installed, proceed to the next step.
    2. Launch Microsoft Remote Desktop.
    3. After launching the Remote Desktop application, you will be presented with an empty list of remote connections. Click + and then Desktop to create a new connection and launch the configuration screen.
    4. Enter the Fully Qualified Domain Name of the workstation you are trying to connect to in the PC Name field:
      * Replace *Computer Tag Number* with the tag number of the computer you are trying to connect to (ex.  AIMS10115 / DOIT11352) *
      1. AIMS users:
        1. *Computer Tag Number*.aims.wisc.edu
      2. Housing users
        1. Computer Tag Number*.housing.wisc.edu
      3. Union users:
        1. *Computer Tag Number*.ad.wisc.edu
    5. In the Username field, enter your username (see below for format for your domain):
      1. AIMS users:  aims\bbadger
      2. Housing Users:  housing\bbadger
      3. Union Users: bbadger
    1. After entering the necessary information, click Save.
    2. To initiate the remote desktop connection, double click the connection.
    3. When you are ready to terminate the remote session, please Log Off instead of Disconnecting from or Locking the workstation.
