Minutes approved 04-03-2023

UC members present: Bernard-Donals, Li, Papp (chair), Tejedo-Herrero, Thibeault, Zweibel

Others: Michelle Felber, Lesley Fisher, Jack O’Meara, Julie Scharm, Jake Smith

Chair Papp called the meeting to order at 1:00 pm.

The minutes for the meeting of March 20, 2023, were approved with a couple changes.

The University Committee discussed the possibility of a Memorial Resolution for Chancellor Emerita Blank. The University Committee also reviewed the Senate agenda for April.

Karl Scholz, Provost, talked about his transition. He plans to leave the institution at the end of April. That means there will an interim provost that will be announced shortly. Before he leaves, he’s interested in making further progress in revisions or recommendations on the processes for hostile and intimidating behavior. There is also a decision to make about the continuance of online undergraduate degree programs. The programs do have good retention rates, which are about twice the industry standard. The Dean’s working group on DEI has been working on developing prototype dashboards, which should be in good share before he leaves. The Library Director search has been postponed until the fall.

There is a working group looking at the SCOTUS decision that will come this summer. They have been discussing scenarios in which there is a narrow decision rather than a more sweeping decision. If the decision is narrower, it may not affect some activities like the TOP hiring program.

John Zumbrunnen, Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, provided updates on the division. The Morgridge Center is holding a conference this week and also participating in Investiture Week. The Office of Undergraduate Advising is taking over areas of learning support and tutoring and bringing together student support areas regularly. The Center for Teaching, Learning and Mentoring is working on a course design initiative and course transformation resources. They are looking to integrate course design and learning support. PVLs have been posted for a Director of Assessment and the staff for the Center for Campus History.

There was considerable discussion around ChatGPT. The Teaching Academy held an event, and CTLM is having another to raise awareness of the tool. Vice Provost Zumbrunnen believes there should be a best practice response to the tool and would be open to having a faculty committee look at this.

Papp motioned, and it was seconded, to convene in closed session pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85(1)(c) and (f) to discuss committee appointments at 2:50.

Papp motioned to reconvene in open session at 3:15. It was seconded and approved.

Papp adjourned the meeting at 3:15.
