Minutes for May 8, 2023

Chair Papp called the meeting to order at 1:15 pm.

Papp motioned, and it was seconded and approved to convene in closed session pursuant to Wis. Stats. 19.85(1)(c)(f) and (g) to discuss waivers, faculty tenure home, committee appointments and legal matters related to the UNC and Harvard U.S. Supreme Court case at 1:15. One tenure clock extension, one tenure home change and two dual roles were approved.

Papp motioned to reconvene in open session at 2:20. It was seconded and approved.

The minutes from April 24 and May 1, 2023 were approved by automatic consent.

Jeff Russell, Dean of Continuing Studies, and Aaron Brower, former Director of Extended Campus for UW System, discussed the UW System report on online learning. Campuses across UW System are not in the same place regarding online learning and want different things from UW System. There are six strategies suggested in the report are already used by any successful online programs. UW-Madison should do what’s best for UW-Madison.

In regards to summer term, Jeff Russell indicated 2020 was the best year for enrollment with about 10,000 students. Students in need are eligible for scholarships without having to apply. There are about 1000 courses being offered this summer about half of which are blended or online.
