We have an Occupant Emergency Plan (OEP).  UW Madison Police Department keeps the OEPs.  It has 36 pages of standard policies (weather, fire, gas leak, etc.) with some details of our building interspersed throughout. Emergency Contacts - how to update your emergency contacts in HRS, SIS, and Terra Dota:  https://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=92478   Contacts in one system do not transfer to the other systems.  You can have multiple contacts listed.  A good emergency contact is usually a family member who knows your health history.  If they don’t live near you, you may want to also add someone who does that could check on you or help you, like a friend or neighbor.   Get their permission first.

Worker’s Compensation - our L&S contact for Worker’s Compensation claims has changed and is now Cheryl Bowes, HR Associate Director, cheryl.bowes@wisc.edu,  608 263-2591.  Remember the employee and supervisor both need to fill out and submit a form within 24 hours of an injury.

Good Samaritan law – WI is a good Samaritan State.  “Any person who renders emergency care at the scene of any emergency or accident in good faith is immune from civil liability for the person’s acts or omissions in rendering such emergency care”.

CPR/AED:  Call 911 in a CPR or AED emergency.  Mariah Gorman in room 160 has recent CPR/AED training and is certified.  She says she may be able to help if needed while waiting for EMT’s to arrive.  Her contacts are mtgorman@wisc.edu and 608 262-2138.  But call 911 first.

Basic idea is only try helping someone if they agree to it or are unresponsive, you think you won’t make them worse, and you won’t endanger your safety.  If there are any chemical, electrical, fire, gas, smoke or other hazards that may harm you, don’t go near or help the victim.  Wait for the responders.  https://www.redcross.org/take-a-class/first-aid/performing-first-aid/first-aid-steps

Suspicious persons – Science Hall is unlocked and open to anyone during weekday hours.  We can ask persons causing problems or acting suspicious to leave the building.  If they won’t leave or seem dangerous report it to Tino’s staff and/or call 911 or UWPD (608) 264-COPS (-2677).  If you would rather call the Community Alternative Response Emergency Services (CARES Team) for a situation related to behavioral health, their phone is 608-255-2345.  They will send a specially trained team to respond to non-violent behavioral health issues.   They can probably use a parking space in our back lot.

Opioid / Fentanyl Overdose:  “Call 911.  All EMTs and University Police carry Narcan.  Each dorm has a Naloxone box near their AED’s.  Naloxone, also known by the brand name Narcan®, is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose.   Nalox-ZONE boxes located in dining halls are accessible to anyone (not just dorm residents or students) during open hours.    If a UW-Madison student is experiencing a drug overdose, they will not receive disciplinary actions, sanctions, or citations as a result of a 911 call.  You will not receive disciplinary actions, sanctions, or citations for your own drug use if you call on behalf of someone experiencing a drug overdose, stay until assistance arrives, and cooperate with emergency responders”.

Calling 911 – they will ask what is the emergency and location.  Our building is Science Hall at 550 N Park St.  Give them the floor and nearest room number.

Masks – we still have covid masks in room 160 that can also be used for outdoor smoke.  EHS recommends wearing outdoor mask when AQI is 150 or more.  N95 mask is best.  PHMDC has info.

Lockdowns:  UWPD can remotely lockdown some campus buildings if needed, but not Science Hall.

Weapons policy –  “Per state law, concealed carry of weapons by individuals who are properly permitted is allowed throughout the state, including outside on campus grounds.  The law allows UW-Madison to ban all concealed weapons in Campus buildings and events.  This indoors and events prohibition does not apply to law enforcement officers or peace officers.  Any person, including employees and students, with a license to carry a firearm or weapon, may possess and store a weapon or firearm in his or her personal vehicle.  There are no restrictions on campus for carrying pepper spray.  While pepper spray might be a good tool that makes one feels safer, it shouldn’t act as a false sense of security”.

Windows - some Science Hall windows don’t open.  If you were trapped in a room like that and needed air or to get out, try breaking the window by swinging a chair at the window corners.  Of course, if you are on second floor or higher you probably won’t want to climb out unless there is a ladder safely in place.
