Setting Permissions for Your public_html Directory

How to set correct permissions on your public_html directory

Personal homepages is a service that is no longer supported. Existing sites will continue to be available as long as the service can be easily maintained, however, they will no longer be updated for functionality. If you wish to set up a personal webpage, you can look into UW Google Sites https://learnuw.wisc.edu/toolboxStudent/gsites.html. Faculty and staff can continue to request vhosts, as this is a separate service, not related to homepages.

In order for all the files in your public_html directory to be visible on the web, you need to have the permissions set correctly. Setting permissions is most easily done using linux.

  1. Connect to best-tux.cae.wisc.edu and log in. The information found here might be of assistance. Don't change to a different directory - stay in your home directory when you log in.
  2. Type
    chmod -R a+rX public_html
  3. Enter.
  4. The permissions on your public_html directory will be updated.
  5. Type
    exit
    and [enter] to log out.
