macOS - Syncing Computer and NetID Passwords

This article details how to sync the password on a Mac to match your campus NetID password.

These steps help ensure that Mac passwords meet UW password requirements and should be followed even if your Mac and NetID passwords are already the same. For more information, see UW-Madison - IT Password Standard.

Complete these steps when your Mac prompts you to "sign into AD.WISC.EDU":
SSO prompt asking the user to sign into AD.WISC.EDU using NetID credentials

  1. Enter the following information:
    1. Username: NetID (e.g. bbadger).
    2. Password: NetID password (i.e. the password you use to sign into UW sites like MyUW, Canvas, etc).
  2. Click Save.
  3. You should be prompted with a new window and the message "Password Synchronization".
  4. Verify your passwords as follows:
    1. Active Directory password: NetID password again. It should be the same as step 1b.
    2. Computer password: The password you use to sign into the computer.
  5. Click Sync Password.
  6. You should see a new screen with the message "Passwords in sync".
  7. Click OK.
