Sonoma Fix Pack for SPSS: Mac

SPSS was having compatibility issues with the recent MAC OS upgrade to Sonoma. IBM has released a fix pack which is now hosted on the UW Campus Software Library within the SPSS Download Page. This document provides step-by-step instructions for downloading and applying the Fix Pack.

Requirements

macOS versions:

  • Sonoma (14.x)

SPSS Statistics versions:

  • 29.0.0.0
  • 29.0.1.0
  • 29.0.1.1

You can find out which version you have by selecting it within the Applications folder, and selecting Get Info... (command + I).

Downloading the Fix Pack

Navigate your web browser to the Campus Software Library (https://software.wisc.edu).
Log in to the Campus Software Library button

Choose UW-Madison organization, and press the GO button and log in using your UW NetID credentials.

Within the Research category, click on SPSS from IBM

Agree to the terms and conditions by clicking the OK button.
Terms and Conditions

You should have a file named 29.0.1.0-IM-S29STATC-MAC-IF001.zip in your designated Downloads folder.
Right-click (or control-click) on the zip file and choose Open to expand the zip file.

The resulting folder contains a Unix executable file and a Readme text file.
NOTE: You may ignore the Readme file, since this KB document is meant to be a replacement with pictures and more details.

Applying the Fix Pack

  1. Quit all instances of the SPSS Statistics 29 desktop application


  2. Click on the Go menu and select Go to Folder… (shift + command + G)

  3. In the window that appears, type /Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/lib/ and press the Return key.

  4. Make a backup copy of libplatdep.dylib Unix Executable File by holding down the option key, and dragging the libplatdep.dylib file to the Mac's Desktop.

    NOTE: The cursor icon will change to show a green circle with a “+” symbol, which indicates the item is being copied.

  5. Drag the libplatdep.dylib file which is in the 29.0.1.0-IM-S29STSTC-MAC-IF001 folder you downloaded earlier to the /Applications/IBM SPSS Statistics/SPSS Statistics.app/Contents/lib/ folder.

  6. Click the Replace button when prompted.

  7. Enter your Mac login credentials and click the OK button.
    Press OK



  8. Make sure the installed file has the correct permissions by opening the Terminal application (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app) and entering the following command:
    sudo chmod 755 /Applications/IBM\ SPSS\ Statistics/SPSS\ Statistics.app/Contents/lib/libplatdep.dylib

    Type your Mac password when prompted and press the Return key.
  NOTE: For security reasons, Terminal does not display password entries.

    If successful, the Terminal will just display the % prompt with no message.

  9. Close any open Finder windows and please keep the backup copy of the “libplatdep.dylib” file in case it is needed in the future.
