Accessible Canvas Pages - Formatting Tips

A summary of formatting tips and tricks for creating accessible Canvas course pages

General Tips

  1. Page layouts should be simple and clean without extraneous formatting, images, symbols
  2. Use smaller chunks of text and information (no long paragraphs when possible) and use bullet points
  3. All text should be black, you should not use different text colors to differentiate information

Headers

  1. Headings should be descriptive, and you should use the predetermined Heading Levels in the Canvas Rich Editor

Headings

  1. When using multiple headings, make sure to add them in order (start with Heading 2, next header down should be Heading 3, and so forth)
  2. You can change the font size and style of your headers after you choose the correct heading level
  3. All other text should be Paragraph

All Images Should be Assigned Alternate Text

You can click on any image in a page and assign it an alternate text that gives a very brief description of the image

Tables Should Only be Used to Display Data, and Not for Decorative or Formatting Purposes
