Application for Placement in Active Learning Classroom (NNH 3235)

Application for placement in the renovated, technology-enhanced classroom on the third floor of Nancy Nicholas Hall.

Human Ecology's newly designed active learning classroom in Nancy Nicholas Hall will be available for instructional assignments beginning with Fall 2024 courses. The Academic Planning & Innovation (API) Teaching & Learning team will coordinate the placement of classes into Nancy Nicholas Hall (NNH) 3235.

In continued support of campus goals surrounding collaborative and active learning and with input from instructors and students, NNH 3235 is designed to support discussion-based collaborative classes of up to 60 students and features movable tables, whiteboards, and tackable acoustical dividers. This innovative classroom space leverages advanced technologies - including monitors at every pod, the ability to share content from each pod to another, and an AV system that allows remote attendees to participate in class activities - in a de-centered layout to meet collaborative instructional goals.

In order to promote effective use of this unique classroom and to further our understanding of the impact of room usage, student learning, and success, classes will be prioritized that meet combinations of the following criteria:
  • Clear plans for implementing collaborative, active learning approaches as central components of the class; approaches used in NNH 3235 should effectively utilize the room’s technology to support these instructional strategies
  • Special considerations may be given to classes that use a standard meeting pattern or have enrollment capacities of 45-60 students (with the exception of LAB and SEM courses that run smaller)
  • Special consideration may be given to instructors who are:
    • redesigning courses to meet a specific instructional or curricular challenge (e.g. high DFW rates, addressing differences in student success based on gender or ethnicity, etc.), and/or
    • actively studying the impact of new course designs on student learning.

Faculty members wishing to teach in NNH 3235 should complete the form below. Department chairs may submit applications for courses that do not currently have an instructor assigned. Once the Teaching & Learning team has reviewed applications and prioritized classes, API will provide the preferred list to the Registrar and inform faculty applicants of the results. Please note that in order to accommodate the greatest number of requests, API may contact individuals about adjusting class schedules if possible.

If you have have not yet taught in an active learning classroom on campus and wish to do so, we strongly encourage you to speak with a Teaching & Learning consultant about how the room might support your instructional approaches for the classroom, as well as how in-class activities might be developed/revised to best utilize this room’s design.
