Printing (macOS) - Mapping a Printer on a Personal Device
Instructions for manually mapping printers via IP on macOS.
If you have a departmentally-owned computer, try following the steps in Printing (macOS) - Mapping a Printer on a UW Device instead.
If you do not know the model or IP address of the printer, please contact Technical Support, noting your department and the location of the printer.
- If possible, find the driver online and install it.
- Departmental copiers and multi-function printers (MFPs) require drivers.
- Smaller desktop printers may use either dedicated drivers found online or the built-in Generic PostScript Printer driver.
- Open System Settings (System Preferences in macOS 12 and earlier).
- Scroll down and select Printers & Scanners.
- Add a printer:
- For computers running macOS 12 and earlier, click the + (plus) button on near the bottom left of the window.
- For computers running macOS 13 and later, click Add Printer, Scanner, or Fax.
- In the Add Printer window, navigate to the
(IP) tab in the center.
- Enter information as follows:
- Address: The IP address of the printer.
- Protocol: HP Jetdirect - Socket.
- Name: An easy to remember name of your own choosing.
- Use: The driver selection field may populate automatically.
- If you installed a driver and it auto-populates, continue to Step 7.
- If you installed a driver and it does not auto-populate, choose Select Software... and search for the driver by the model number.
- If you did not install drivers, choose Generic PostScript Printer. This option may not work for all printers, particularly copiers and MFPs.
- Click Add.
- If asked about printer options, select the appropriate options and click OK. Most printers support "duplex" or two-sided printing.
Troubleshooting
- Retry the same steps, but select Line Printer Daemon - LPD during step 6b.
