Remote Desktop Connection - Windows
This is assuming that both computers are connected to the WCER network via an ethernet cable or with GlobalProtect. Follow these instructions to connect to the network via Global Protect
1) Computer Name
First you must know the computers name that you want to connect to. This will be a 6 digit number starting with 404 or 405 that is on a red or white sticker on your computer. The full name of the computer you're trying to connect to is "WCERXXXXXX.ad.education.wisc.edu" where the XXXXXX is your 6 digit number. You can also go into settings and search for "About this PC" and you will find the name. Your computers name will be listed next to the green arrows in the picture below.
2) Open Remote Desktop Connection on the other computer
Go to the other computer you want to work from.
- Press the Windows key on your keyboard or click on the windows icon in the bottom taskbar.
- Search for the application "Remote Desktop Connection". Typically it will show up by just typing "remote".
- Open the application "Remote Desktop Connection".
Optional: You can pin the application to Start or the Taskbar. See the next image below for more details.
Optional - Pin to Start or Taskbar
If you would like to pin the "Remote Desktop Connection" application to the Start menu or Taskbar you can click on one or both as listed above. The picture below illustrates where both of those options will go.

Pin to Start - When you click on the windows icon in the taskbar or press the windows key on the keyboard the window below will show up. The green square highlights where a "Pin to Start" application would go.
- Pin to taskbar - The arrow indicates where the application would go if you selected the option "Pin to taskbar".
Single Screen
1) Remote Desktop Application
Input the name of the computer that you want to connect to where it says "Computer:". Then click "Connect".
2) Enter Credentials
A pop up window will come up to enter in your SoE password. If you are connecting with a different user account you can click "More Choices" and enter in a different username and password. Then click "OK". A new window will come up with your connection. It will look and behave like a normal desktop computer.
3) Disconnecting
When you are done click the "X" at the top of the screen to disconnect your remote session. You will get a prompt to confirm that you want to disconnect. Click "OK" to disconnect or "Cancel" to remain connected.
Multiple Screens
1) Remote Desktop Application
Click on "Show Options" at the bottom of the window.
2) Computer Name
Input the computer name that you want to connect to.
3) Multiple Displays
Click on the "Display" tab at the top. Make sure "Use all my monitors for the remote session" is enabled. Then click "Connect" at the bottom.
4) Enter Credentials
A pop up window will come up to enter in your SoE password. Input your SoE password and click "OK" or hit enter on your keyboard. A new window will come up with your connection. It will look and behave like a normal desktop computer.
Note: If you are connecting with a different user account you can click "More Choices" and enter in a different username and password.
5) Disconnecting
When you are done click the "X" at the top of the screen to disconnect your remote session. You will get a prompt to confirm that you want to disconnect. Click "OK" to disconnect or "Cancel" to remain connected.
