CHM Undergrads - Expectations for Summer Research Credit

Expectations/requirements for summer research credit students.

Contents

General

Supervisors and students are asked to contact Jane Lambert (jane.lambert@wisc.edu) to inform her of their intent to work for research credit over the summer. Jane will confirm which summer class the students want to take and begin the authorization process so that the student can register for that class.

The rules for the summer term are a little different from working for credit during the fall or spring semesters. The summer session is only 8 weeks long, so students may register for a maximum of 2 credits. Summer research credit students are expected to complete the usual credit student requirements:

  • 45 hours of labwork/credit
  • Complete a semester project
  • Participate in the semester project peer reviews

The summer semester officially begins during early-to-mid June and ends in August. See: https://secfac.wisc.edu/academic-calendar/ for specific dates. The student should plan ahead, as they will not have the full 8 weeks to complete their labwork and the semester project. If feasible for the student and their supervisor, students may begin their labwork and the semester project before the official summer semester start date. Supervisors will typically be asked for grade recommendations 1-2 days before the end date of the summer semester and often only 1 day after students turn in their semester papers.

FAN Meetings

FAN meetings are not held during the summer semester. Instead, students will be expected to attend 4 equivalent meetings. CHM community meetings are acceptable substitutes. During the summer, community meetings do not follow a consistent schedule and may be canceled with short notice, so there may not be 4 of them during the summer semester. Please contact Jane Lambert (jane.lambert@wisc.edu) for information on other meetings that might be acceptable substitutes.

Semester Project

  • Information: Semester Project, Peer Review, ChatGPT Guidelines
  • The peer review will be held roughly 4 weeks into the summer semester. Critiques for the peer review will be due one week later. Students should plan to have their semester paper completed if unpolished by that time and should schedule a meeting with their supervisor to review their project during the same week.
  • There is no exam period for the 8-week summer session.
