What are the benefits of hiring a student worker?
Student jobs benefit both the student and the employer. These positions allow students to learn professional skills while maintaining the opportunity to support their academic pursuits. Employers have the opportunity to gain unique perspectives from students and create connections with the student body.
Most departments on campus promote a “student-first” mindset for these positions.
What is the first step in hiring a student employee?
Student worker positions paid from department funds require pre-approval. You must complete the Request Form and receive approval before offering a position to a student. You will receive a response within three business days. If your request is approved, you can select a student and complete the Student Hourly Appointment Form.
How long does the student hiring process take?
From the time that the Student Hourly Appointment Form is submitted it takes roughly one week to process everything for a new appointment.
Are student workers paid? How is pay rate determined?
Yes, student employees are paid, unless they are completing research for credit only. Please see the document below to review how student wages are determined.
Is there a limit to the amount of hours a student employee can work?
Yes, a student can work up to a maximum of 20 hours a week.
How can I give my student employee a raise?
There is an opportunity at the beginning of each semester to give your student workers a $.25 raise.
Are there restrictions on hiring international students?
According to the UW–Madison Student Affairs Office, “Federal regulations permit the employment of international students on F-1 and J-1 visas within certain limits. These visas allow students to work in jobs related to their major fields of study. F-1 students can work on ‘practical training.’ J-1 students may work on ‘academic training.’

Can student employees be involved in multiple groups within the Department of Chemistry?
There is no limit to number of groups a student worker can join, as long as their total hours per week does not exceed 29.0 hours combined between all their positions throughout campus.
