Microsoft 365 - Office 365 ProPlus add-on license

The Office 365 ProPlus (OPP) add-on license provides UW-Madison Microsoft 365 accounts the option to download, install, and activate Microsoft 365 desktop and mobile applications on personal devices for free. Office 365 ProPlus is not the same as the Microsoft 365 web app license, which provides access to the Microsoft 365 apps online.

Note: Effective July 1, 2024, the Office 365 ProPlus (OPP) license will be removed from UW-Madison Microsoft 365 accounts in response to Microsoft discontinuing the license on October 31, 2024. Learn more.

How can I tell if I am already using an Office 365 ProPlus add-on license?

If you have a Microsoft 365 application (ex: Word, Excel, PowerPoint) installed on your computer or mobile device, please partner with your IT department to see if the Microsoft 365 application was installed using an Office 365 ProPlus (OPP) add-on license.

If your UW-Madison Microsoft 365 account was assigned an OPP add-on license, you will receive three targeted communications to prepare for the upcoming removal of the add-on license on July 1, 2024. Learn more about the discontinuation of the OPP add-on license and when you can expect to receive an email notification about this change.

What will happen when I no longer have access to the Office 365 ProPlus add-on license?

Currently, several UW-Madison Microsoft 365 accounts have access to both the Microsoft 365 web app license and the Office 365 ProPlus (OPP) add-on license. Effective July 1, 2024, the Office 365 ProPlus add-on license will be removed from these accounts. This is in response to Microsoft discontinuing the OPP add-on license on October 31, 2024. Learn more about this change

When the OPP add-on license is removed from a UW-Madison Microsoft 365 account, the desktop or mobile applications, excluding mobile Outlook and Teams apps, that were installed on a device will continue to exist. They will not automatically uninstall on their own. Instead, the next time you open the Microsoft 365 desktop or mobile application you may see a notice to buy, renew, or reactivate your Microsoft 365 subscription.

To keep using Microsoft 365 desktop or mobile applications, you'll need to purchase a personal Microsoft 365 license. Please note, you will continue to have access to the Outlook and Teams Microsoft apps after the add-on license is removed. If you don't need to continue to use Microsoft 365 desktop or mobile applications, you do not need to purchase a personal Microsoft 365 license because you will continue to have access to Microsoft 365 web apps

View Microsoft documentation and Office 365 ProPlus FAQ to learn more about the subscription banner alert when the OPP add-on license is no longer available.
