Recording Sharing Policy
The Mead Witter School of Music recognizes the need for its students and faculty to use departmentally-produced audio/visual recordings of live performances in their own learning, teaching, and research. The School also recognizes its responsibility to abide by laws that govern the use of copyrighted material. We are committed to sharing recordings internally for purposes that are consistent with Fair Use legal doctrine. Recipients of these recorded materials are likewise responsible for abiding by copyright law.
Faculty members who indicate a request for a recording of their own performance or that of their ensemble or guest artist on the intake form will be sent a link to access that recording by the Technical Director within five business days following the event. Recordings shared in this manner should be downloaded within three months, after which time the recording will no longer be available.
Faculty members wishing to make recordings accessible to students as part of curricular instruction may utilize Kaltura MediaSpace to embed media in appropriate Canvas courses. Instructions for operating Kaltura can be found here. Recordings must be posted such that they are not downloadable and will be removed from the Kaltura MediaSpace by School of Music administration at the end of each semester.
The School of Music does not provide recordings of performances to students except to winners of concerto competitions and to those students who have made advance arrangements for their individual recital to be recorded and who have paid the appropriate fee. Faculty may occasionally request recordings of large ensemble performances on their students’ behalf if such recordings are required for applications to graduate school, music festivals, competitions, grants, etc.
The School of Music is unable to provide editing or post-production work on recordings except to correct technical errors at the discretion of the production team.
Recordings of School of Music performances are intended for private, educational use (e.g., research, instruction, learning, analysis, criticism, grant applications, et al.) and may not be sold, licensed, copied, distributed, or shared on social media or other personal media channels.
